Hibiscus (Rosselle) is the deep red flower used to make bissap across West Africa and the Caribbean. Beyond its beautiful color, hibiscus is one of the most studied plants for blood pressure reduction, with clinical trials showing effects comparable to low-dose ACE inhibitors. Known as bissap in Senegal and Creole communities, and 'sorrel' in Jamaica and Trinidad (used especially at Christmas), hibiscus is drunk daily across the Caribbean.
